The Rolex Cellini collection was introduced in the 1960s as Rolex’s elegant dress watch line, distinct from its rugged Oyster-cased models. Named after Benvenuto Cellini, a Renaissance goldsmith, the collection prioritizes refined aesthetics, thin cases, and precious metals over sportiness or water resistance. Unlike Rolex’s professional watches, Cellini models often feature manual-wind or quartz movements and come in varied case shapes, including round, tonneau, and cushion styles.
Over the decades, Rolex has experimented with sophisticated dial designs and luxurious materials, making the Cellini line a niche favorite among collectors who appreciate Rolex’s craftsmanship beyond its tool watches. Though less mainstream, its timeless elegance and rarity contribute to its enduring appeal.
The Rolex Cellini 4082 is one of the most intriguing models from the collection, embodying the elegance of mid-century Rolex design. The reference 4082 is notable for its distinctive case shape, often featuring curved or tonneau-style lugs that add an extra layer of sophistication.
The ‘Vignette’ dial is one of the most visually captivating dial treatments Rolex has ever produced. The term "Vignette" refers to a gradation effect, where the dial color fades from a rich center hue to a darker or almost black outer rim.
The Bordeaux color version of this dial is particularly striking; it starts with a deep, ruby-red color in the center and transitions to an almost black or dark burgundy shade near the edges. The glossy enamel-like effect gives it an extra layer of depth and refinement. The markers, typically in yellow gold, add contrast and luxury.
Rolex Vignette dials are relatively uncommon, making them highly collectible.
Offered for sale here is a Rolex Cellini Ref. 4082 with ‘Vignette’ Bordeaux dial in 18K yellow gold which dates to 1995.
The ‘Vignette’ Bordeaux dial is stunning; it has aged to a light ruby-red in the center and a deeper burgundy towards the edges. The lacquer shows a subtle and even crackling, giving the watch tons of character.
The 18K yellow gold is preserved in unpolished condition. It features sharp lugs and edges and has aged to a lovely rosy patina hue. It shows normal signs of wear. The case back remains in the same condition, letting clearly visible all engravings.
It is suited on a handmade black lizard strap with a matching original yellow gold-plated Rolex buckle.
The original sapphire crystal is clean.
It is running well and keeping time, although service history is unknown.
Macros of dial and case are available under request.
