The Rolex reference 16750 is a transitional model in the GMT-Master lineup, produced from around 1981 to 1988. It marked a shift in technology, as it was one of the first models to feature the Caliber 3075 movement, which introduced a quickset date function—something the earlier models, like the 1675, lacked. The 16750 is similar in design to the 1675 but includes updated features, including the more modern movement and a slightly improved case design.
It came in both matte dial and glossy dial versions, a detail that has intrigued collectors. These two dial types reflect different production periods and are one of the features that differentiate variations of the 16750.
The matte or “Pallettoni” dial version was produced in the earlier years of the 16750’s production (around 1981-1983). The glossy or “Bicchierini” dial version began to appear around 1984 and continued until the end of the 16750’s production in 1988. As the name suggests, the glossy dial has a smoother, more reflective surface, giving the watch a more polished, modern look compared to the matte dial. The markers on the glossy dial are surrounded by a white gold ring (WGS – White Gold Sorrounding).
The example offered here is a Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16750 from 1988 with WGS ‘Bicchierini’ dial aged in a uniquely manner.
“Meteorite Nebula”, “Purple Eclipse”, “Deep Space Mocha”, “Galactic Blackberry” … no matter which one you like better, this exceptionally aged Rolex GMT earns its self-given "Cosmic Panther" nickname from its striking patina and overall condition combination.
The glossy dial has developed a deep spotted brown texture, reminiscent of a celestial expanse, with speckled hues that resemble cosmic dust scattered across the night sky. This unique aging effect gives the watch an almost meteorite-like appearance, making it truly one-of-a-kind. The white gold-surrounded hour markers have aged to a clean, light patina hue, matching perfectly with that on the hands.
Adding to its mysticism, the once all-black bezel insert has faded into a rich nebula-like purple, echoing the deep, enigmatic tones of a twilight sky. The stainless steel case is the last feature that finishes setting this piece apart; razor-sharp raw, like the claws of a panther.
Giving it a stealthy, powerful, and effortlessly elegant presence, just like a panther under the moonlight, the watch’s dark, star-speckled dial, dusky purple bezel and unpolished steel case, create a rare blend of ferocity and grace, making it a statement piece in any collection.
A true collector’s treasure, the self-proclaimed "Cosmic Panther" embodies the untamed beauty of natural aging, making it one of the most captivating vintage Rolex watches out there.
It comes suited on its original Rolex Oyster 78360 solid-links stainless steel bracelet with 580 end links and matching clasp code M5 that shows light signs of wear and little stretch.
The original acrylic crystal has some light scratches that could be easily buffed away, and some minor dents at some points of the edge but also remains unpolished going along with the overall condition of the watch.
The watch is running well and keeping time, although service history is unknown.
Macros of dial and case are available under request, as well as movement and inner case back pictures.
