1986 Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16753 with Box, Papers and Original Sales Receipt

The Rolex GMT-Master 16753, introduced in the late 1970s, was a two-tone steel and yellow gold version of the GMT-Master reference 16750. This model represented Rolex’s effort to modernize the GMT-Master line while maintaining its reputation as a functional pilot’s watch. It was a direct successor to the earlier 1675/3 and incorporated several important upgrades.

 

One of the most significant improvements in the 16753 was its movement. Rolex equipped it with the Caliber 3075, replacing the older Caliber 1575. This new movement introduced the quickset date function. Another technical change was the updated hand stack order, with the hour hand positioned closest to the dial, differing from the earlier 1675/3, where the GMT hand was at the bottom.

 

The 16753 was available in two main dial variations. The first was a black dial with gold accents, offering a classic and elegant look. The second was the brown "Root Beer" dial. Paired with these dials was an all-black or brown and gold bi-color bezel insert, enhancing the luxurious yet sporty appeal of the watch.

 

Production of the 16753 continued until the late 1980s, when it was replaced by the GMT-Master II reference 16713. This successor introduced an independently adjustable GMT hand, marking a significant evolution in the GMT lineup.

 

Today, the Rolex GMT-Master 16753 remains a sought-after piece among collectors, valued for its transitional status, vintage charm, and distinctive two-tone design.

The satin black dial has aged in a stunning way, letting visible a brown even spotting, especially around the white gold surrounds of the hour markers. The lume has aged to a warm creamy hue and the hands match perfectly.

 

The even case shows signs of some previous polishing but remains strong with sharp and well-defined bevels and factory finishes. The black bezel is also in excellent condition and shows only light wear. The 18k yellow gold bezel shows a lovely rosy patina.

 

It comes suited on its original Rolex Oyster 78363 solid-links stainless steel and 18k yellow gold bracelet with 480 end links and clasp code I11 that shows a lovely rosy patina, normal signs of wear and little stretch.

 

The original acrylic crystal has some light scratches that could be easily buffed away.

 

The watch is running well and keeping time, as it has been fully serviced recently.

 

It comes as a full set which includes inner box, wallet, calendar, original punched papers and original sales receipt from famous Indonesian Rolex Retailer Waktu Seiko showing it was sold on the 9th September 1988 for 3,425,000 Indonesian Rupiah which now is shy of 200 USD but at the time was around 2,000 USD.
