1982 Rolex Submariner Ref. 16800 'Transitional' matte 'Pallettoni' dial

The 1680 Submariner was introduced in 1967 and up to '76-'77, it came in a famous variant known as “RED SUB”. In this configuration, we can find 6 different “Marks”: three “METER FIRST” (depth in meters and in feet) and three “FEET FIRST” (depth in feet and meter).

From 1978 to 1981, the 'Red' Submariner disappeared leaving room for the white. The 1680 white has three “Marks”.

 

In 1981, the 1680 was discontinued letting place to the new 16800. The first batches of the 16800 held many aesthetic similarities to the older 1680, including the matte dial – or ‘Pallettoni’ - which was later replaced for gloss dials – or ‘Biccherini’ - on late 16800s, this is why these early batches are called transitional models.

Offered for sale here is a Rolex Submariner Ref. 16800 ‘Transitional’ with matte ‘Pallettoni’ dial which dates to 1982.

 

The matte dial is beautiful, showing a lovely light aging featuring a very subtle kind of tropical stardust patina and a stunning creamy patina hue on the hour markers. The hands have aged some shades darker.

 

The stainless steel case is very thick and sharp, with only minimal signs of wear. The case back remains in the same condition. The original bezel insert is in great condition too, showing a deep petrol blue hue especially under the sunlight. The original pip/pearl has a nice light creamy patina hue.

 

The original sapphire crystal is clean, with a very light dent on the edge at around 7.

 

It is in full working order and keeping time, although service history is unknown.

 

It comes suited on its original Rolex Oyster 93150 stainless steel bracelet with 593 end links, clasp code J8, and divers’ extension that shows very little stretch.
