The Rolex Datejust reference 16018 is a prestigious model that was introduced in the late 1970s and produced throughout the 1980s. As part of the iconic Datejust line, the 16018 stood out for being crafted entirely in 18k yellow gold, including its case and bracelet (usually a President or Jubilee bracelet). It is part of the broader 16XXX series, which included various Datejust models, but the 16018 represented one of the more luxurious offerings in solid gold.
Not all Rolex Datejust reference 16018 models came with a sapphire crystal. The earlier versions of the 16018, produced around the late 1970s and early 1980s, actually featured an acrylic crystal, which was standard on Rolex watches at that time. Rolex began transitioning to sapphire crystals in the early 1980s, and eventually, the later 16018 models came equipped with sapphire crystals.
The Ref. 16018 was produced during an era when Rolex was solidifying its reputation as a premier luxury brand. The use of precious metals like 18k gold in this model positioned it as a status symbol of success and elegance.
Although the 16018 has been discontinued, it remains a desirable model for collectors due to its timeless design, high-quality materials, and Rolex's renowned craftsmanship.
This example offered here is an early Rolex Datejust Ref. 16018 in 18K Yellow Gold with a stunning blue ‘soleil’ dial aged to a purple hue that dates to 1979.
The glossy ‘soleil’ or ‘sunburst’ blue dial has aged to an astonishing purple hue, notably visible when the sun rays hit it. The condition is great, remaining clean and showing very light wear (marks seen on pictures are actually on the crystal). The gilt printings are clearly visible with no missing parts. It features tritium lume plots that show a creamy patina which match with that on the original hands.
The 18k yellow gold case is excellent not showing important signs of polishing and presenting sharp lugs with normal signs of wear from use. The 18k yellow gold bezel is sharp too, showing expected signs of use for its age. The case back remains in the same condition. All gold hallmarks are clearly visible. The inner case back has the correct hallmarks and stamps.
The acrylic crystal has some very light marks that could be easily buffed away.
The watch comes fitted on an unworn handmade leather strap with a matching yellow gold Rolex buckle.
It is running great and keeping time, as it has been recently serviced.
Macros of dial and case are available under request, as well as inner case back, movement and service pictures.
