1978 Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675 'Root Beer' MK4 matte 'Nipple' dial

The Rolex GMT-Master reference 1675/3 was the first steel and gold variant of the iconic GMT-Master. The reference 1675 was produced from 1959 to 1980, and the 1675/3, specifically combines stainless steel and 18k yellow gold, giving it a distinctive and elegant look while retaining the aesthetics of the original GMT-Master.

 

The 1675/3 was part of the range aimed at customers who wanted the utility of the GMT-Master with a more luxurious, refined appearance with a touch of gold. The two-tone combination of stainless steel and yellow gold gives the watch a unique aesthetic that makes it both sporty and sophisticated, suitable for various occasions.

 

The 1675/3 is often found with the distinctive brown matte dial, which is known as the "nipple" dial. This nickname comes from the small, raised hour markers that resemble tiny nipples, giving the dial its characteristic appearance.

 

The brown dial, combined with the two-tone case and insert, makes the 1675/3 particularly unique and visually striking, giving the watch a color scheme reminiscent of a root beer soda, with its rich, brown hues and golden accents. This playful nickname, “Root Beer”, has become a staple among collectors to describe this model, which stands out for its unique aesthetic compared to other GMT-Masters.

 

The matte finish of the dial gives it a more understated, vintage feel compared to the glossy dials found on later models like the 16753. This version of the GMT-Master was produced during the 1970s and is highly sought after by collectors for its rarity and distinctive aesthetic.

 

The two-tone GMT-Master remains a highly regarded model among collectors today, offering a balance of performance, style, and rarity.

The example offered here is a Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675/3 ‘Root Beer’ with MK4 ‘Nipple’ dial which dates to 1978.

 

The period correct, brown, grainy matte MK4 dial remains in flawless condition, featuring a vibrant brown hue when exposed to sunlight. The ‘Nipple’ hour markers present a charming sandy patina hue which matches perfectly with that on the original golden hands. The gilt printings remain very clean and bright, almost showing an orange-ish hue, especially noticeable under the sun.

 

The stainless steel case has been previously polished and remains thick, showing finishes that follow factory standards. It shows very light wear signs. The case back remains in the same condition. The 18k yellow gold bezel has aged featuring a stunning purple-ish patina. The original insert, which features white numerals on the brown portion (unlike later inserts for the 16753 that feature yellow numerals) remains almost intact, featuring a very light and subtle natural fade to the stunning brown and yellow hues.

 

The original acrylic crystal has some very minor marks that could be easily buffed away if wanted.

 

It is running strong and keeping excellent time as it was fully serviced on the 4th January 2025.
