The Rolex 5513 is one of the most iconic and long-running models in the history of the brand, introduced in 1959 and produced until 1989. It is part of the Submariner family, designed specifically for diving, and became known for its clean, classic design, robust build, and reliable movement.
The 5513 originally featured a 40mm case, a rotating bezel with minute markers, and a dial with a "Mercedes" hand configuration. It was powered by Rolex’s Caliber 1530 movement, which was later upgraded to the 1520. The watch was marketed as a professional dive watch, but it gained significant popularity with both divers and watch enthusiasts due to its durability and timeless style.
The shift from the gilt gloss dial on the 5513 to the meters-first matte dial began around the 1.6 million serial range, around 1966. Most cases with a 1.7 million serial number were made in 1968, by which time the meters-first matte dial was fully in production. However, between late 1969 and early 1970, corresponding with the 2.2 million serial range, there was a period where both meters-first and feet-first matte dials on the 5513 were being produced. It has been suggested that the switch from meters-first to feet-first dials may have been motivated by an effort to boost sales in the U.S. market, a country that had not yet, and still has not, widely adopted the metric system.
The 5513 was discontinued in 1989, replaced by the reference 14060, which marked the introduction of the first modern Rolex Submariner with a date function. Today, the 5513 remains highly collectible and a key piece for vintage Rolex enthusiasts.
Offered for sale here is a Rolex Submariner Raef. 5513 ‘Meters First’ that dates to 1967.
The dark gray texturized matte dial remains in great shape showing light wear and featuring a lovely vivid patina hue. The original hands have aged to a matching hue.
The stainless steel case shows signs of previous polishing but remains thick and with some factory finishes still visible, specially on the prominent lug chamfers. The original bezel insert is stunning, having faded to a deep petrol-blue hue.
It is suited on its original Rolex Riveted 7296 stainless steel bracelet with 80 end links and 4/65 clasp date code that remains in good condition, showing minimal stretch for its age.
The watch is running well and maintains excellent time as it has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.
Macros of dial and case, as well as movement and inner case back pictures are available under request.
